A Free Retirement Review
for NYPD and FDNY

Your pension, your papers-in date, your survivor option and your 457(b), gone through on your own numbers. It costs nothing, and there is nothing to sign.

Sirmium Capital gives NYPD and FDNY members a free retirement review. You start with our free pension calculator, which gives you a pension estimate on your own membership date, salary and years. You get a personal guide and a short video on your numbers. Then you go through the open decisions with us on a free 15-minute call: when to put your papers in, your Variable Supplements Fund payment, which survivor option protects your family, and what to do with your 457(b). We are a New York state-registered investment adviser, and we are paid only if you later choose to have us manage your money.

What we go over

  • Your pension estimate. What your Tier 2 or Tier 3 pension pays, yearly and monthly, from your membership date, salary and years of service.
  • When to put your papers in. 20 years for a service pension. For firefighters, two more marks matter: on Tier 3, 23 years for the full yearly inflation raise, and from 25 years, a longevity bonus added to the salary the pension is figured on.
  • Your Variable Supplements Fund payment. $12,000 a year for members who retire for service with at least 20 years. Disability and vested retirees do not get it.
  • Your survivor option. The maximum pension, or an option that keeps paying your spouse or another beneficiary, and what each does to your check. Once your first full pension check arrives, the option cannot be changed.
  • Your 457(b). Left in the City's plan, it can be drawn at any age after you leave the job without the 10% early-withdrawal penalty. Roll it to an IRA and money taken out before 59½ can cost that 10%. Keeping it or moving it is one of the decisions on the call.
  • How it all fits together. Your papers-in date changes your pension, which changes how much your 457(b) and savings have to cover, and for how long. Taxes and Social Security sit on top of that.

What it costs, and how we are paid

The review costs nothing: the calculator, your guide and video, and the 15-minute call.

We are fee-only. We take no commissions and sell no insurance or annuities. If you later decide to have us manage your money, our yearly fee for first responders is 1% of the assets we manage, as filed in our Form ADV. That is a conflict you should know about: we earn that fee on money you move to us, and nothing on money you leave in the City's 457(b). Our full fees.

What the review does not include. Your official numbers. Your final pension and the cost of each survivor option come only from your pension fund, and no outside calculator can reproduce them, ours included. Our estimates are for education, not recommendations. Check the tax side with a tax professional.

Who we are

Sirmium Capital LLC is a small, independent investment firm in New York, registered as an investment adviser with the State of New York. You can look us up on the SEC's public adviser database under CRD #167682. We are not part of the NYPD, the FDNY, either pension fund or any union. We build free pension tools for both departments and update them when New York pension law changes.

How to start

  1. Open your department's free pension calculator and put in your membership date, salary and years.
  2. Ask for your guide on your numbers.
  3. Book the free 15-minute call and bring your numbers.

Free. About two minutes. Educational tool, not investment advice.

Already have your numbers? Book a free 15-minute call.

FDNY EMTs and paramedics are in NYCERS, not the Fire Pension Fund, so the FDNY calculator is built for the fire side.

Common questions

Yes. The calculator, your guide and video, and the 15-minute call cost nothing, and there is nothing to sign. We are paid only if you later choose to have us manage your money.
Your pension fund gives you your official numbers and processes your retirement. It does not tell you when to go, what to do with your 457(b) or which survivor option fits your family. That is planning, and it is the work of an investment adviser who knows the Tier 2 and Tier 3 rules.
Fifteen minutes. It works because you arrive with your numbers from the calculator, so the call is spent on your decisions, not on gathering figures.
Not automatically. In the City's plan you can draw it at any age after you leave the job without the 10% penalty, and an IRA can cost that 10% on money taken before 59½. Whether moving it makes sense depends on your age, your plans and your other income, which is what the review goes through.
No. Sirmium Capital LLC is an independent firm, registered as an investment adviser with the State of New York, and not affiliated with either department, either pension fund or any union.
