Sample plan: how it works

A walk-through of what a full retirement plan covers for an FDNY member's household, in the order a planner works through it. The pension decisions have their own plan; this one uses its result. Move the sliders and the plan updates.

Show the example for

Every figure here is made up. The member, the family and every dollar amount are examples, chosen to show how a plan works. None of it is a real person's data. The real rules on the page are the state laws on the Tier 3 pension (half the final average pay at 20 years) and when its yearly increase starts.

Step 3 · Analyzing your course of action

Retirement income and savings

See your pension plan

In today's dollars. The plan raises it with inflation every year.

The example retires at the years of service that bring the full yearly increase: 23 for FDNY, 25 for NYPD. Example Social Security: $2,600 a month at 67 in today's dollars, smaller if started earlier and larger if later. Example offset: the pension drops $900 a month, in today's dollars, at 62.

Inflation and growth

Raises spending and college costs, and shrinks what a fixed pension buys.

What $1 today buys in 20 years

Growth on this page is shown after inflation, so a dollar figure in today's dollars buys what that many dollars buy now. Future dollars are the larger numbers you'd see printed on a statement.

Step 1 · Understanding your circumstances

Your situation (example)

Age / service45 / 17 yrs
Base salary
457 plan$95,000
IRA$40,000
Roth IRA$15,000
Brokerage$30,000
Saving now$1,200/mo
FamilySpouse 44 · child 9

Cash flow and emergency fund

Example take-home pay: $9,000 a month. A common guide is three to six months of spending in cash you can reach quickly. With one full-time earner, the guide leans toward six.

Step 2 · Identifying and selecting goals

Your goals (example)

  • Retirement
  • Buying powerKeep the pension's buying power as prices rise.
  • FamilyKeep an income going for your spouse if you die first.
  • EducationPay for most of your child's four years of college without loans.
  • MaybeMove out of the city after retirement, possibly to a lower-cost state.
Step 3 · Analyzing your course of action

Withdrawal order

A common starting order is to spend the regular brokerage account first, the tax-deferred 457 and IRA next, and the Roth last. The brokerage account's earnings are taxed every year, while the other two can keep growing without a yearly tax bill.

  1. FirstBrokerageTaxed on gains and dividends as you go.
  2. Next457 and IRATaxed as income when withdrawn. Example tax: 15%.
  3. LastRoth IRAQualified withdrawals come out tax-free.

Two things can change the order for a city retiree. Money taken from a governmental 457 before 59½ has no 10% early-withdrawal penalty, which an IRA doesn't share. In years when your income is low, taking some tax-deferred money early can cost less tax than taking it later, when required withdrawals start in your 70s. Which order fits depends on your real accounts and tax picture.

Step 3 · Analyzing your course of action

College savings in a 529

Example: $8,000 in the 529 today and a four-year cost of $120,000 in today's dollars, rising with inflation.

529 when college starts
