At Sirmium Capital, we believe the same thoughtful planning we use for families and veterans should extend to the next generation. That's why we're partnering with NYC Honor, an elite AAU basketball program founded by former Ivy League coaches and supported by leaders from the FDNY.

"We're not just sponsoring a basketball program. We're teaching these kids how money works — before anyone else gets the chance to take advantage of them."

What We're Actually Doing

NYC Honor is different. These aren't just great players — they're students being recruited by Harvard, Columbia, Princeton, and schools like them. The talent is there. But talent alone won't protect them when the first NIL check lands in their bank account and they don't know what to do with it.

That's where we come in. We're volunteering our time to build a real financial education program for these players and their families. No jargon. No sales pitch. Just practical knowledge about how money works — before they're thrown into a system designed to separate young athletes from it.

Here's what we're teaching:

  • 1. Learn the Basics: Budgeting, saving, and understanding where your money goes. It sounds simple, but most people — adults included — never learn this properly.
  • 2. Start Investing Early: The earlier you start putting money to work, the more it grows. We show players how compound interest works and why starting at 16 or 18 gives them a massive head start over someone who waits until 30.
  • 3. Get NIL-Ready: When a college offers a deal, most kids just look at the dollar sign. We teach them about taxes, spending traps, and how to set aside money so their first check doesn't become their last. And when they're ready, Sirmium Capital is here to serve as their personal financial advisor.

Why Starting Young Matters

Here's the thing about money: the earlier you start, the less you actually need to put in. A player who starts investing even a small amount in high school can end up way ahead of someone who waits until their 30s — even if that person invests more total cash. That's the power of compound interest. Your money earns money, and then that money earns money too. It doesn't take a finance degree. It just takes starting.

"The goal is straightforward: help them develop as players, teach them how money works, and be there when they need real financial guidance."

Direct Connection: The FDNY & 9/11 Community

NYC Honor is deeply rooted in the FDNY community. As a firm built for first responders and 9/11 families, this partnership felt like a natural fit. We're honored to support the men and women who serve New York City — and to help their kids reach their full potential, on the court and beyond.

As NYC Honor grows, we'll keep showing up. We believe that combining NYC basketball grit with Ivy League academics and real financial education creates something bigger than any one game or deal. It creates a path.
