Who Can Help You Plan
Your FDNY Pension?

Before you put your papers in: who gives you the official numbers, who helps with the decisions around them, who we are, and what our free plan includes.

Two different places help with two different parts of it. The NYC Fire Pension Fund is the only source of your official numbers: your tier, your final average salary as the Fund figures it, your pension, and what each survivor option costs. For the planning around those numbers, such as when to put your papers in, what to do with your 457(b), and which survivor option protects your family, you want an investment adviser who knows the FDNY Tier 2 and Tier 3 rules. Sirmium Capital is a New York state-registered investment adviser that builds free FDNY pension plans, and you can start yours in about two minutes.

What the Fund tells you, and what it leaves to you

The Fire Pension Fund calculates and pays your pension. Ask it for your tier and membership date on its records, your final average salary as it calculates it, and the cost of each survivor option at your age and your beneficiary's age. Those costs are certified by the New York City Office of the Actuary, and no outside calculator can reproduce them, ours included.

What the Fund does not do is tell you what to choose. These decisions are yours:

  • When to put your papers in. 20 years for a service pension. On Tier 3, 23 years for the full yearly inflation raise. From 25 years, a longevity bonus is added to the salary your pension is figured on.
  • Your Variable Supplements Fund payment. $12,000 a year, paid to members who retire for service with at least 20 years. Disability and vested retirees do not get it.
  • Your 457(b). Left in the City's plan, it can be drawn at any age after you leave the job without the 10% early-withdrawal penalty. Roll it to an IRA and money taken out before 59½ can cost that 10%. Check the tax side with a tax professional.
  • Your pension option. The maximum pension, or a survivor option, and who that protects. Once you receive your first full pension check, the option cannot be changed.

Each of these moves the others. Your papers-in date changes what your pension pays, which changes what your 457(b) has to cover and for how long. That is what a plan is for.

Who we are

Sirmium Capital LLC is a small, independent investment firm in New York, registered as an investment adviser with the State of New York. You can look us up on the SEC's public adviser database under CRD #167682.

William Harrison, our Co-Founder and Chief Investment Officer, is the firm's investment adviser (CRD #5943509). Specific recommendations come from him.

We are not part of the FDNY, the Fire Pension Fund or any union. We build free pension tools for FDNY members, we follow New York pension law, and we update the tools when it changes. When Chapter 58 of the Laws of 2026 moved the Tier 3 full inflation raise to 23 years and added the 25-year longevity bonus, we changed the calculator to match.

What the free plan includes

  1. Your pension estimate. Your membership date, salary and years of service give you an estimated yearly and monthly pension for Tier 2 or Tier 3. You do not need to give an email to see it.
  2. Your Pension Printout. Add your age and it is written up: what the pension pays after federal tax, what the Variable Supplements Fund adds, your 457(b) as a range rather than one number, and what each survivor option does to the check. It ends with the decisions above.
  3. Your Full Retirement Plan, if you want it. A ten-section document built in your browser around four decisions you cannot undo: going at 20, the survivor election, the 457(b) rollover, and whether you will need a second career. It is yours to print whether or not you ever speak to us.
  4. A free 15-minute call. Bring your printout and go through the decisions with our team. Nothing to sign. If you then want us to build a plan from your own records, we set that up on the call.

What it does not include. A survivor benefit in dollars, or any figure that replaces the Fund's. Your final pension and your option costs come from the Fund. The calculator and the printout are estimates for education, not recommendations.

How to get yours

  1. Open the FDNY pension calculator and put in your membership date, salary and years.
  2. Add your age and press Get my Pension Printout.
  3. If you want to talk it through, the printout ends with the free 15-minute call.

Free. About two minutes. Educational tool, not investment advice.

EMTs and paramedics are in NYCERS, not the Fire Pension Fund, so this calculator is built for the fire side. New to it? Watch the two-minute walkthrough.

Common questions

It gives you your official figures and processes your retirement. It does not advise you on when to go, what to do with your 457(b), how to invest, or which survivor option fits your family. That is planning, and it is the work of an investment adviser.
No one is required to use one. An adviser helps most where the decisions affect each other: your papers-in date, your survivor option, your 457(b) and your taxes all move together, and the Fund answers only the pension part.
Nothing. The calculator, the Pension Printout, the Full Retirement Plan and the 15-minute call are free, and there is nothing to sign.
